Jean Soyer, learn more about the artist
Jean Soyer, born in 1937, trained in engraving and graphic design at the École Estienne before beginning a career in advertising. In 1987, a painting by Nicolas de Staël triggered his desire to paint. He then moved toward lyrical abstraction, influenced first by Georges Mathieu and then Fabienne Verdier. Since 1997, he has devoted himself fully to painting. Working in oil with a knife and a comb, he creates works with dense, warm colors and deep contrasts, carried by calligraphic gestures and an energy that overflows the frame. Since 2007, Jean Soyer has chaired the Salon Violet, an institution founded in 1935, which he passionately runs to highlight the diversity of the contemporary scene.
